Carol Brodie's Rarities Jewelry for the Bold and Beautiful

Diamonds are a girl's best friend.  And Carol Brodie should know.  The former Global Director of Communications for jeweler-to-the-stars Harry Winston has bejeweled some of Hollywood's hottest leading ladies including Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow.

"Jewelry should make you feel good," she says, "And nothing feels like fine jewelry."

Thanks to Brodie, now every woman can live the glamourous life and add a quality (non-costume jewelry) statement piece to her wardrobe.

In June 2009 the "Queen of Diamonds" started her own brand, Rarities, sold exclusively on HSN and HSN.com.  The splurge-worthy fine jewelry collection features an eclectic assortment of precious and semi-precious gems inspired by sought after styles from around the world.

Just in time for Rarities' June birthday, I chatted with the personable designer and got a sneak peek at her one-year anniversary collection which features a mix of spiritual talismans including evil eye, Buddha, and cross pendants.

"When a woman wears a piece of jewelry," she muses, "it should evoke a memory or tell a story."

I have my eye on the chunky evil eye bracelet (above right photo) and Brodie wears her own bling-y pendant with the symbol every day.

"The more successful I become, the more jealous people become," she admits. "The eye protects me from the haters."

Like Brodie, the Rarities customer loves to make a bold statement with accessories. The bigger the better. "Jewelry speaks," she says.  "It takes a lot of confidence to wear a big [cocktail] ring."

Tune in to watch her launch the Rarities One-Year Collection live on HSN June 19th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.  For updates, you can also follow the social media fan on Twitter @CarolBrodieHSN.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Graces Brooklyn Academy of Music, June 4-9, 2024

Dance is expression. Dance is spiritual. Dance is activism. Dance is life. I feel most alive when I am listening to music and dancing.  As a spectator and fan, some of my fondest moments of watching dance performances have been witnessing the dignity and grace of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Every time I see the Ailey company, I am inspired, moved, and grounded in the beauty and complexity of the African American experience.  Photo by Paul Kolnik For me, the highlight is always "Revelations," Mr. Ailey's three-part ode to his upbringing in the Black Baptist church. The three sections -- "Pilgrim of Sorrow"; "Take Me to the Water"; and "Move, Members, Move" -- tell the story of African American faith and persistence from slavery to freedom. Over the weekend,  I had the pleasure of taking an outdoor Community Workshop in downtown Brooklyn, where we learned some of the choreography for "Revelations." I beamed from ear to ear...
